Typical Rank Structure of Yacht Crew

Chain of command is important on a yacht so it is good to be aware of who you will report to. Every boat is structured differently and can vary according to the size of the vessel. Let’s take a look at the typical rank structure of yacht crew, onboard a 50m and 100m yacht.

50m Motor Yacht:

  • Captain will oversee all the boat operations

  • Chief Officer/Mate is the right-hand man of the captain and responsible for the exterior along with the deckhands.

  • Chief Stewardess is responsible for the interior, and the stewardesses will usually rotate through service, housekeeping, and laundry.

  • Chef will often work alone and cook for both guests and crew.

Rank Structure of Yacht Crew on a 50m yacht, starting with a Captain at the top. Then on a lower level; Chief Stew, Chef, Chief Engineer, Mate. Then Under Chief Steward; 2nd Steward and Junior Steward. Under Mate; Deckhand and Junior Deckhand.

100m Motor Yacht:

  • Captain oversees all operations

  • Chief Officer/Mate responsible for overseeing the Deck Team.

  • Purser – the administrator of the boat. Deals with all accounting, invoicing, and embarkation documents

  • Large interior team that is divided in housekeeping and service and led by a head of department

  • Stewardess and Deckhand roles may have dual responsibilities such as Yoga Instructor and Masseuse

  • Executive Chef for guest food and another Chef for crew food

  • Can range from between 30 – 50 crew members

Yacht Salaries and Crew Benefits- What will I Earn?

As an industry, not only does yachting offer crew a competitive salary package, it also comes with a number of other benefits.

Salaries depend on a variety of different factors, these can include:

  • Previous experience

  • Additional Skills (Masseuse/Nurse/Personal Trainer etc)

  • Qualifications

  • Size of the vessel (bigger doesn’t always mean better)

  • Leave package

  • Motor or Sail

  • Whether the yacht is private or charter (On a charter yacht you could receive tips, however on a private boat you will generally get a higher base salary)

Other benefits can include

  • Health/Accident Insurance

  • Flights to and from the vessel

  • Food

  • Basic toiletries

  • Uniforms

  • Laundry

  • Additional training/courses

Depending on the vessel operation, you can be paid in different currencies including GBP, EURO or USD etc. Every yacht is different and the salaries are just a guide. Leave packages are different for each yacht and can depend on their operation. Holiday is accrued for length of time onboard, or some yachts offer a rotational schedule.

Entry level Deckhands and Steward/ess should be expecting around €2,500 Euros per month. Day work is usually paid around €100-€120 Euros per day with lunch included.
